When Elena is begging for Damon’s life and says to Lee (Lexi’s boyfriend) “When it’s real you can’t walk away”, he replies “well that’s a choice you’re not gonna have to make,”

So to a complete stranger, Delena appear to be boyfriend/girlfriend.
